Fjordenhus, a building that rises from the water

This unusual construction is the work of the famous Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. It is also his first building, from the drawing plans to interior decoration, in partnership with the team of architects of his studio.

Built in the port of Vejle in Denmark and called Fjordenhus, the House of the Fjord, this building is composed of 4 cylindrical blocks divided into pillars. A choice of construction that fits with the area since it makes it possible to let the wind blow past, a characteristic of the local climate, and to distribute natural light inside the structure as well as possible.

28 meters high, this unusual fortress building is a link between the fjord and the city centre and offers spaces directly related to their context, both natural and industrial, thanks to elliptical openings that slash the facade on several levels. In all, some 970,000 bricks were needed for its construction. Used both indoors and outdoors, they have been carefully selected by Eliasson in different shades, fifteen different tones in total, bringing subtle shades of colours.

While the upper floors are the offices of the investment company Kirk Kapital, the ground floor is open to the public and accessible by a bridge. Among others, there are unique works by Olafur Eliasson interacting with the landscapes of the fjord and the port. The two sculptures of the artist, Fjordhvrivel and Fjordenhus Meridian, were thought of in a minimalist and swirling style.
