The Polestar O2 concept ushers electric roadsters into a new era.

Polestar, the high performance electric car brand, has unveiled a new concept car that redefines sports roadsters.

Dubbed the Polestar O2, like the symbol of oxygen, the hardtop convertible is Polestar's vision of the performance this type of car should have with all the benefits of electric mobility.

Polestar is a car manufacturer from the Chinese Geely group and is part of the performance division of Volvo Cars Corporation, in Gothenburg, Sweden. Polestar is considered Volvo's in-house tuner, as Mercedes-AMG is for Mercedes.

Polestar also has its own models, which are produced in China, in the Luqiao factory, for the whole world. Polestar is currently banned from being marketed in France because its logo looks too much like the logo of Citroën and DS. And the car builder is on trial for that. With the Polestar O2, it is the birth of a small revolution in sports cars, which are moreover, electric…

The emotion of driving is intended to be there. Exciting, playful and fiery, lively and light. Precise body control, elevated rigidity and intuitive dynamics are the inherent benefits of the bonded aluminum platform, adapted from the Polestar 5, developed in-house by Polestar's R&D team in the UK.

The purpose of this concept is to show that this bonded aluminum platform intended for the future Polestar 5 can also be used for other models, including pleasure vehicles far from the countless SUVs. The assertively low and wide body, compact 2+2 cab design and long wheelbase embody the proportions of a classic sports car but with a distinctly modern electric feel.

Still more aerodynamic, it’s a car that wants to be a meeting point between technology and art, between precision and sculpture, with a determined but not aggressive posture. The Polestar O2 also features advancements in durability and technology. A new thermoplastic mono-material is widely present in its cabin. Recycled polyester is the only material used for all soft interior components. This simplifies recycling, while reducing weight and waste.

In a world increasingly dominated by social media, the Polestar O2 has an autonomous drone integrated behind the rear seats. Developed in conjunction with Aerofugia's consumer electronics brand, Hoco Flow, the drone can be deployed while the car is in motion, to record the perfect driving sequence.

Polestar engineers have developed a retractable platform, which lifts behind the rear seats to create a bump-free zone that allows the drone to take off, when the car is in motion.

The drone operates autonomously, automatically following the car at speeds of up to 90 km/h, and the driver can choose between atmospheric footage - ideal when cruising along the coast or action-packed footage, which is more sporty.

After filming, the drone autonomously returns to the car. Video clips can be edited and shared directly from the central 15-inch screen when the car is parked.

Polestar plans to launch three new cars over the next three years, each with the potential to gradually realize some of the ideas presented by these concept cars.
