Matachica, a private retreat between the reef and the rainforest

Matachica, a private retreat between the reef and the rainforest.

It is a few kilometers north of San Pedro, Belize, that we discover this small refuge surrounded by lush vegetation and unparalleled marine life.

This beach and jungle setting is part of Ambergris Caye, a protected corner of paradise that is home to one of the largest barrier reefs in the world.

The Matachica is made up of small, individual thatched-roofed casitas painted in vibrant hues, arranged like a traditional village and blending into the landscape.

The decoration was created by Montreal twins Byron and Dexter Peart. The aim is to draw as much inspiration as possible from the natural beauty and architectural features of the region.

In each casita, we find all the necessary comforts, with touches of local craftsmanship, four-poster beds, views of nature and colorful frescoes by illustrator Cécile Gariépy.

When it comes to flavors, head to the Mambo restaurant, which offers cuisine that combines local specialties and international classics, not to mention the delicious cocktails at Danny’s Bar, the outdoor beach bar wrapped around a tree.

Tranquility reigns here. Whether facing the breathtaking views from the comfort of the casita's hammock, by the stunning mosaic-tiled infinity saltwater swimming pool, or in the privacy of the octagonal stations along the jetty, everything is calm and voluptuous.

And that's without counting on the coffee scrubs, fruit facials and rejuvenating massages at Jade Spa.

The Matachica is therefore definitely a kind of address that people whisper confidentially to each other for a break of luxury and well-deserved relaxation!
